Temperature dependence of pressure-driven structural transitions in the polar hexagonal multiferroic, Mn2Mo3O8

The physics of complex magnetic materials remains of interest to the scientific community due to their potential in quantum computing. Materials which contain 4d and 5d magnetic ions often show exotic structural and magnetic behaviour. Mn2Mo3O8 exhibits a Kagome-type layers of Mo3O13 layers separated by complex layers comprised of alternating MnO4 tetrahedra and MnO6 octahedra which are connected in a honeycomb type arrangement. Magnetic ordering arises solely from the manganese layer as a result of the trimerisation of the Mo4+ cations. Structural behaviour under applied pressure provides new insights into the stability of materials and in this case the stability of the Mo4+ trimers. This proposal seeks to investigate the pressure dependence of Mn2Mo3O8 at temperatures of 300 K and 120 K. This information is crucial for the continued understanding of these materials and to direct doping strategies.
