Ring-shaped tissue constructs develop cell-mediated tension over time. To show that rings were in tension, we removed rings matured for 28 days from around the agarose peg using forceps and transferred the rings into fixative to capture the instantaneous relaxation of tension in the tissues. Rings exhibited collagen crimping behavior characteristic of highly-aligned, collagen-rich soft tissues like ligaments and tendons.
