CaMeRoofs Case Study Dataset: Medieval Roofing Systems in the Veneto Hinterland (5th-15th Century)

This dataset is part of the CaMeRoofs project (The Canopy of Heaven under a Microscope: Cataloguing Medieval Roofs) and provides a structured and interoperable collection of data on medieval roofing systems in the Veneto hinterland (Northern Italy), dating from the 5th to the 15th century. The dataset includes 12 detailed case studies of selected ecclesiastical buildings and documents multiple aspects of their roofing systems, including architectural history, construction phases, structural typologies, materials, conservation status, and evidence of repairs and restorations. Data have been collected through an interdisciplinary methodology combining archival research, on-site investigation, architectural survey (including 3D laser scanning), and archaeometric analysis (e.g. dendrochronology). Each case study is organised according to standardised descriptive criteria to enable comparison, reuse, and scalability. The dataset is currently provided in structured PDF format, ensuring comprehensive and standardised documentation of each case study; further developments will include the implementation of machine-readable formats to enhance interoperability and reuse. The dataset is designed following Open Science and FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and is intended to support research in architectural history, archaeology, conservation, and digital humanities, as well as to inform heritage management and preservation strategies. The resource is continuously expandable and aims to provide a reference model for the cataloguing and analysis of medieval roofing systems at a broader European scale.
