FDOT FHWA Smoothed Urban Boundaries TDA

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census publishes a list of qualifying urban areas based on the results of the Decennial Census (87 FR 80114). Areas with population of 5,000 or greater are extracted and sent to the FDOT Districts to coordinate the adjustment process in cooperation with local agencies and communities. The original urban area polygons are adjusted or smoothed to accommodate a simplified planning, programming, and maintenance of federal-aid eligible roadways.Maps of the adjusted boundaries are reviewed by the Central Office and FHWA Division for final approvals. To qualify a roadway as part of an urban area, the territory identified according to the criteria must encompass at least 2,000 housing units or at least 5,000 persons. Roadways in urban areas with less than 5,000 persons will be coded as rural for HPMS reporting purposes. The term rural encompasses all population, housing, and territory not included within an urban area. Urban areas are expanded to include adjacent areas as provided for by FHWA regulations. This dataset is maintained in RCI by the TDA Office.
