资源简介:
Plankton was sampled at a single site off Seabee Hook, Edisto Inlet, Cape Hallett during the 04-05 season. Significant numbers of newly spawned embryos were first observed 25 November. Based on the embryos colour and size they were identified as a Sterechinus spp (Echinodermata). This identification has been confirmed by recent DNA sequencing (2008). We studied two aspects of this event: i) the development rates in the natural environment, and ii) the fine scale depth distribution of the embryos in the water column. For analysis of depth distribution, plankton samples were taken at 12.5, 35 and 50 m depth in the water column to examine the potential for exposure to UV during development. These samples were preserved in a formalin-based Steedman's fix and returned to the University of Auckland for sorting.
