Identifying genes related to cold dormancy from Serangium japonicum

The ladybird beetle, Serangium japonicum, is an important predator of Bemisiatabaci. To further understand the biology and cold dormancy mechanism of this predator, its transcriptome was sequenced by the Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. S. japonicum samples were collected from eggplants in the Academy of Hunan Agricultural Science, Changsha, China in winter 2016 (21 adults in the cold dormancy group) and summer 2017 (21 adults in the normal temperature group). A total of 7 adults were collected from plants every time as biological replicates. Cold dormancy adults were exposed to 5-8℃ for 30 days. Total RNA was extracted from S. japonicum with the EasyPure RNA kit (Transgen Biotech, Beijing, China). RNA was sequenced by Sangon Biotech (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Shanghai, China, on an Illumina HiSeq 2500, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
