High throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing of two treatments in on-site wastewater treatment system (OWTS) laboratory experiment

The bacterial community of an on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS) laboratory experiment was characterized by 16S gene amplicon high throughput sequencing (2x300bp Illumina). Samples were collected the matrix of each experiment in distinct oxic, anoxic, and oxic/anoxic transition zones in December 2016. Liquid effluent samples were also collected on filters. Sequences were used to determine similarities/differences between the treatments, oxygen availability zones, and sample types. This study is unique and novel in the field of wastewater treatment microbial ecology.
