Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) has a long history of domestication and its origin is controversial. High-depth resequencing analysis of 17 accessions revealed that Asian cultivated types are closely related to wild Asian species but distinct from European cultivated types, supporting the notion that Asian cultivars were domesticated from wild Asian species. SNP comparison between Asian genotypes coupled with expression profiling identified domestication-related gene candidates across the genome, many of which were related to root architecture, cell wall, and sugar metabolism. Overall, this study provides novel insight into evolution of the mesohexaploid genomes of the tribe Brassiceae and the selection of genes during domestication.
