Anonymized Student Performance Data from Two Linear Algebra Courses Using STACK at the University of Trieste (2023/24)

📄 Dataset Description: STACK-Integrated Assessment in Linear Algebra Courses This dataset contains anonymized student performance records from two first-year Linear Algebra courses within the Engineering BSc program at the University of Trieste, Italy. The data spans two academic years, capturing student outcomes before and after the introduction of the STACK e-assessment system. 📅 Academic Years Covered: 2022/23 (Pre-STACK): Before the integration of STACK. 2023/24 (Post-STACK): After STACK was introduced in both courses (Course A and Course B). In addition to exam performance data, we include STACK Moodle quiz analytics for the 2023/24 academic year. 🔒 Note: In accordance with university policy, only the final grades of students who passed the exam are recorded. As such, all datasets include only students who scored 18 or higher (out of 30). 📁 Files Included Filename Description anonymized_Lin_Alg_course_A_preSTACK.csv Course A exam scores before STACK was implemented. anonymized_Lin_Alg_course_B_preSTACK.csv Course B exam scores before STACK was implemented. combined_Lin_Alg_course_A_postSTACK.csv Course A exam scores after STACK integration, with quiz metrics. combined_Lin_Alg_course_B_postSTACK.csv Course B exam scores after STACK integration, with quiz metrics. anonymized_STACK_quiz_data_CourseA.csv Moodle-exported STACK quiz attempt data for Course A. anonymized_STACK_quiz_data_CourseB.csv Moodle-exported STACK quiz attempt data for Course B. 🧩 Variables in the Exam Score Files Variable Description student_ID A randomly generated, anonymized ID for each student. The ID format encodes the course and whether the record is from the Pre- or Post-STACK period. Example: studentID023_COURSE_A_POSTSTACK final_exam_grade Final exam score (0–30). Only includes students who passed (≥18). Additional Variables in Post-STACK Datasets: Variable Description num_quiz_submissions Total number of STACK quiz submissions made by the student. quiz_submission_variability Variance in the relative timing of quiz submissions. Lower values indicate more consistent engagement. avg_quiz_score Average score across all STACK quizzes. cat_total_score Sum of best scores per quiz, representing the student's STACK-based Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) total. 🧮 Variables in Moodle STACK Quiz Data The Moodle quiz files (anonymized_STACK_quiz_data_CourseA.csv, CourseB.csv) contain row-level quiz attempt records. Variable Description student_ID Anonymized ID linked to the exam data. quizID Identifier for the specific STACK quiz. Started on Timestamp when the student began the quiz. Completed Timestamp when the quiz was submitted. Time taken Time between start and submission (e.g., "11 days 22 hours"). Grade/10.00 The student’s score on the quiz, out of 10.
