The New Mexico Spadefoot toad (Spea multiplicata) is native to the southwestern United States. This species and its close relative, the Plains Spadefoot, show remarkable adaptations to the hot dry climate and seasonal rains of the southwest. These species also have the ability to spend extended periods buried underground without feeding. The goal of this project is to develop basic genomic resources to enable a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying Spea's remarkable life-history.
