CMIP7 Climate Forcings Dataset: Simple plumes for anthropogenic aerosols

We provide the updated and extended data version of the Simple Plumes (SP) parameterization for anthropogenic aerosol optical properties and their effect on clouds for use in CMIP7 historical experiments. This is the official data release for use in CMIP7 experiments. Information about all CMIP7 forcing datasets are available from input4MIPs. The SP parameterization is available for the Supporting Information of Stevens et al. (2017). Users of the parameterization have requested CMIP7 input data for SP based on the updated and extended emission data. This work is carried out in collaboration with the CMIP Climate Forcings Task Team. We provide here the SP dataset for the time period 1850 to 2023 inclusive, based on the CMIP7 emission data set of CEDS version CEDS-CMIP-2025-04-18. The SP data generation is based on the scaling method for gridded SO2 and NH3 emissions (Fiedler et al., 2019) as for the CMIP6plus data version SPv2 (Fiedler and Sudarchikova, 2024). The method was transfered to generate the SP data for the historical period to update and extent the earlier time series for 1850 to 2014 for use in CMIP6 (Stevens et al., 2017). The here published SPv2.1 data are evaluated against SPv2 and SPv1 in the enclosed documentation. A first comprehensive assessement of the updated historical data including climate forcing and response analyses are available from Fiedler et al. (in review).
