Flint Hand Axe

A flint hand axe, made by experiential archaeologist Karl Lee at our recent 'Stone age arts and crafts' family event. Karl spent the morning with our young archaeologists club (SPARCS) getting them to try their hand at this ancient skill. In the afternoon he gave demonstrations to visiting families at our stone age arts and crafts event. This hand axe would have been used for the butchery of large animals. Archaeology shows them to have been used and reshaped many times and they are hardly ever found where they were manufactured i.e. they were a much valued and used item. Karl also made some beautiful flint arrow heads of the type found in the Bronze Age and left us with the thought that ancient people were no less intelligent than us, they just knew how to do things most of us will never learn.
