Ill-Health among Young Unemployed Joiners and Carpenters

The purpose of the survey is to analyse the pattern of unemployment among 10,000 skilled workers (joiners and carpenters) during the first 3 to 8 years after their apprenticeship. The pattern of unemployment among them is compared with their periods of illness and their symptoms of ill-health, somatic as well as mental symptoms. The main purpose of the survey is to study the relation between unemployment and mental illness, taking into consideration also the temporal relations of the two events. Thus, the survey seeks to answer tentatively these 4 questions: #1) To what an extent may unemployment result in mental illness? #2) To what an extent may mental illness result in unemployment? #3) What are the consequences of unemployment for the prognosis # of someone who is mentally ill? #4) What kind of social and occupational information could # function as indicators of later periods of unemployment? #The survey is a trend study in which a fixed cohort of people is followed from the moment they have completed their apprenticeship.
