TYPOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF AFFIXATION IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK: IMPLICATIONS FOR TRANSLATION

This paper examines the typological aspects of affixation in English and Uzbek and their implications for translation. Affixation is a key word-formation process in both languages; however, its structure and function differ significantly due to their typological characteristics. Uzbek, as an agglutinative language, makes extensive use of suffixation, where multiple affixes are attached to a root in a linear and transparent manner. In contrast, English, which is more analytical, employs affixation in a more limited and less systematic way. These differences create challenges in translation, as a single word in Uzbek may correspond to a phrase or clause in English. The study highlights how translators must apply various strategies, including transformation and expansion, to accurately convey meaning across languages. The findings demonstrate that understanding typological differences in affixation is essential for achieving accurate and natural translation.
