Quantification of Food Systems Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Colombia: A Bottom-Up Approach.

This database consolidates information on agricultural input use at both the municipal level (municipality_data) and the farm level (farm_data). The first dataset was compiled through a systematic review of official data sources, which provide information on agronomic management activities for major crops in Colombia. These data represent a typical or representative production system for each municipality. The second dataset was generated from farm-level surveys conducted under different projects implemented by the Bioversity International–CIAT Alliance. In both scenarios, the information was processed using the CCAFS Mitigation Options Tool to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The resulting emission outputs are reported in the corresponding tabs of the database. Methodology:At the municipal level, cultivated areas for each crop were obtained from official national statistical databases. Activity data required for Tier 1 emission estimates were subsequently compiled for each representative production system, using one hectare as the reference unit. Activity data included information on crop management practices, fertilizer and other input use, and crop production. These data were sourced from official databases, growers federations, and reference literature relevant to Colombian agricultural systems. At the farm level, activity data were collected through semi-structured surveys applied to farmers, capturing the same Tier 1 activity data variables. Farm-level data collection was restricted to geographic areas where previous CIAT-led initiatives or projects had been implemented, ensuring data availability and consistency. Greenhouse gas emissions were estimated following IPCC Tier 1 methodology, and using the CCAFS Mitigation Options Tool.
