XMM-Newton and Chandra to study the ionization cones of the Seyfert 2 NGC5252

A 70 ks observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252, to be performed both by XMMNewton and Chandra, is requested. Xray observation of Seyfert galaxies havehighlighted that 40% of these objects show extended emission probably due to anoutflowing gas. We choose NGC 5252 to test this scenario. for its remarkableoptical ionization cones. Goal of this proposal is to disentangle the followingissues: 1)to firmly demonstrate that the diffuse emission is due to an AGNdriven outflow; 2)to understand if the outflowing gas is confined by gravity;3)to study the past history of the AGN activity; 4)to observe the shadow of thedusty torus.
