Marsupials are born with undeveloped immune tissue, yet at birth they must make their way from the sterile uterine environment to the teat located on the mother’s abdomen. Thus, from birth, the newborn marsupial skin comes into direct contact with potentially pathogenic bacteria and must protect itself from immune challenges. The main objective of this research was to examine the expression of immune genes in the skin of the developing tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii). Transcriptome sequencing was used to obtain a holistic view of immune gene expression in the developing tammar wallaby skin.
