The PREC dataset is a global monthly precipitation analysis dataset (precipitation anomaly, unit: mm) with a spatial resolution of 2.5°×2.5° spanning from 1948 to the present. Specifically, the terrestrial precipitation analysis data (PREC/L) is derived via optimal interpolation using observations from more than 17,000 meteorological stations, including NOAA/NCDC GHCN Version 2 and NOAA/CPC CAMS datasets. The marine precipitation analysis data (PREC/O) is reconstructed through Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis using historical station observations from islands and continental regions. The EOF modes are derived from the EOF analysis of the full spatial distribution of recent satellite-estimated precipitation data (OPI, 1979–1998). The current V1.0 version is developed based on the first eight global EOF modes for each season, plus the first four EOF modes of the remaining parts of the Atlantic Ocean basin. The terrestrial precipitation anomalies provided in this dataset are calculated against the 1951–1990 climatological mean, while the marine precipitation anomalies are computed using the 1979–1998 climatological mean.
