Replication package: Bottleneck identity, not averages — an Alkire-Foster diagnostic approach to formal institutional measurement (96 countries, 2002-2020)

This replication package supports the paper "Bottleneck identity, not averages: an Alkire-Foster diagnostic approach to formal institutional measurement (96 countries, 2002-2020)". The package contains the panel dataset compiled from public sources, the constructed Alkire-Foster deficit indices, and supporting tables that document variable definitions, bootstrap stability of the bottleneck identity, and country-level institutional classifications used in the paper's appendix. Contents: - panel_master.csv: 1,816 country-year observations across 96 countries (2002–2020), compiled from QoG Standard Dataset, Worldwide Governance Indicators (WGI), Economic Freedom of the World (EFW), Penn World Table 10.01, World Development Indicators, Hofstede 6D, and the WVS/EVS Integrated Values Survey. - panel_with_deficits.csv: the same panel extended with the constructed Alkire-Foster deficit indices, normalised formal components, threshold variants, and the variables used in the main regressions. - 00_variable_dictionary.xlsx: documentation of each variable, source and construction procedure. - bootstrap_stability.csv: per-country-year bootstrap-stability indicator of the bottleneck identity under WGI-calibrated measurement noise, used to reproduce Online Appendix Table H.1. - country_classification.csv: regional and institutional classification flags (OECD, EU member, Eurozone, CEE accession, non-EU OECD, high-income) used in Online Appendix Tables H.2-H.3. Sample: 96 countries, 2002-2020, 1,816 country-year observations.
