Rationale: Mesenchymal stem cells have immune regulatory properties that may improve sepsis outcomes. Knowledge on their effect on the host response in patients with sepsis is limited. Objectives: To determine the effect of allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Cx611) on the host response during sepsis caused by community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP). Methods: Patients with CABP requiring mechanical ventilation and/or vasopressors were randomized to two intravenous infusions of Cx611 (day 1 and 3) or placebo. Blood samples were obtained before treatment initiation and at five time points thereafter (up to day 14) for analysis of blood transcriptomes.
