Cross-section survey. Te Kupenga was run as a post-census survey. A post-census survey provides a unique opportunity to run a large survey of a small sub-group of the population in a cost-effective manner. Administrative lists such as the electoral roll suffer from serious under coverage, and using the Statistics New Zealand household survey frame is expensive because of the need to screen a large number of households in order to find the target population. Using the Census as a frame provides a degree of coverage not matched by any other single method. In addition, information collected from respondents in Te Kupenga can be linked with their census responses to questions such as income and labour force status. This minimises respondent burden and helps to reduce data collection costs. TK 2013 used computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI). Te Reo module Te Kupenga 2013 repeated some questions from the 2001 Survey on the Health of the Māori Language in its te reo module. The 2001 Survey on the Health of the Māori Language dataset was re-weighted and generated results, which made it comparable with the 2013 Te Kupenga results in its te reo module. en-NZ
