Obligate scavenging in Old World vultures has evolved through wide-ranging molecular adaptations that confer protection against pathogens. These adaptations - some of which have evolved independently in two divergent lineages of scavengers - have occurred in genes underlying the secretion and production of gastric acid, immunocompetence, and neutralization of biogenic amines.
