This report describes the results of an archaeological and architectural reconnaissance survey conducted for PlN 1097.04.101 in the Town of Castleton-on-Hudson, Rensselaer County New York, for the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). The proposed project involves improvements to the drainage and resurfacing of a section of NY Route 9J (North and South Main Street) and NY Route 150 (Scott Avenue) in the village of Castleton. The project description and survey limits were provided by DOT's Region I Office (Appendix F - Project Map. Volume ll). The project width is 10 m (32 ft) from the centerline on both sides or the road. The length is 1,34 I m (4 ,400 ft) along 9J and 426 m ( 1,400 ft) along Route 150, a total of I. 7 km ( I mi). The estimated survey area is 3 .2 hectres (7 .9 acres). In June 200 1, staff of the Cultural Resource Survey Program (CRSP) of the New York State Museum (NYSM) conducted the field work for the project. Archaeological testing was conducted by Scott Cardinal, George Bailey, Mike Boyle. Ben Kahn, Julia Mounteer, Rachel Rollo, Joel Ross, Tracey Thomas, Mike Twist. and Lawrence Xinakes. Tracey Thomas identified and catalogued the artifacts. Project map data was compiled and drafted by Lihua Whalen. This report was prepared by Scott Cardinal. Nancy Davis. and Mark LoRusso.
