Oral mucositis was induced in hamsters by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 5-FU followed by mechanical trauma (MT) of the cheek pouch. Animals received topical applications of S-nitrosoglutathione (0.5 mM), vehicle (HPMC) or saline 1 h prior to 5-FU and every 12 h thereafter for 10 days. H = healthy group, i.e., animals without oral mucositis.
