Understanding the evolutionary history of the phylum Thaumarchaeota, as well as the potential N-cycle, C-cycle, and economic effects of its members, will require the documentation of complete genomes of a greater number of Thaumarchaeota lineages, and an in-depth look at the range of metabolic potential contained within this phylum. This study completes a draft genome of what we hypothesize to be a chemolithoautotrophic, NH3-oxidizing Thaumarchaeota candidate lineage from the high Arctic, and annotates that genome in order to unveil the metabolic potential of this particular strain as a potential main-player in the active layer of the Arctic permafrost, and as a member of a globally significant phylum, in both its ecology and its taxonomy.
