Numerous records from terrestrial, marine, and ice core archives demonstrate that Earth’s climate has undergone millennial-scale rapid changes over the past 800,000 years, with their amplitudes linked to glacial cycles. Prior to the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT), global glacial cycles had smaller amplitudes and shorter periods, and the relationship between rapid climate changes and glacial cycles remained unclear. The scarcity of long-timescale, high-resolution continental and marine records from the Pleistocene has hindered understanding of the evolution and dynamics of millennial-scale climate changes. This dataset compiles centennial-resolution elemental time series from the North Atlantic, Iberian Margin, Balkan Peninsula (Lake Ohrid), and the Chinese Loess Plateau. These elemental proxies reveal that millennial-scale climate changes have persisted ubiquitously across the mid-latitude Northern Hemisphere over the past 1.5 million years. The findings of this study show that the amplitude of millennial-scale climate changes is not only strongly modulated by glacial underlying surface boundary conditions, but also continuously influenced by variations in Earth’s orbital precession and obliquity. This study integrates four elemental geochemical proxies sensitive to abrupt climate changes to construct a new representative record of millennial-scale climate changes, providing critical geological data for further evaluating the dynamic linkages between orbital and millennial-scale climate changes.
