In 2002 a national assessment was carried out, which was commissioned by the Flemish government, to assess whether pupils have achieved the attainment targets for reading comprehension and mathematics at the end of primary education. Data were collected through 3 reading tests and 14 mathematics tests. The reading tests dealt with the consultation of diagrams and tables to benefit the audience, the structuring of a study text and the answering of questions about a story at the structuring level. The mathematics tests were compiled into four test booklets and each test in a booklet referred to a different mathematics subdomain. Each pupil completed one test booklet. A representative sample of 6069 pupils from 200 Flemish primary schools participated.
