16S rRNA census of archaeal and bacterial communities in Old Woman Creek freshwater wetland soils

Freshwater wetlands are important sources of atmospheric methane, yet little is known about the environmental controls on the composition and distribution of methane-cycling microbial communities within these ecosystems. To characterize these communities we used 16S rRNA marker gene sequencing (shotgun sequencing reads from V3-V6 region 16S rRNA amplicons) to independently survey both the archaeal and bacterial domains in soils across spatial, water-cover, and geochemical gradients within the Old Woman Creek freshwater wetland at Lake Erie, Ohio, USA.
