VPRS 18877 Wave Measurement Readings and Scend Tests

This series comprises various records related to scend (wave) tests off Port Phillip Heads and other wave measurement readings in relation to ships. The ‘scend’ is the height or lift of a wave. This series contains several loose sheets of paper showing various readings of wave heights. Some will record the name of the ship used to collect the measurements. Others map the measurements to certain locations, in particular Port Phillip Heads and their proximity to Point Lonsdale. Some of the records appear to show the path the ships took through the Heads as the tests and measurements were taken. Some of these records are stored together as loose sheets in a bundle. The bundle also contains a letter from a staff member at the Survey Office of the Public Works Department written in 1982, which describes the methods used to record the readings depicted on the records.  The series also contains a small manilla folder which houses several handwritten sheets of measurements, including ship names and geographic coordinates, from 1962. The final items in the series are two small hand-written maps of scend test readings in Port Phillip Heads. Both of these have been mounted onto wooden boards. These records were transferred to PROV from the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum.
