From Senses to System: Multisensory Design using CSPM and SAR for Sustainable Hospitality

In the context of hospitality, multisensory design plays a crucial role in creating meaningful spatial experiences. However, its implementation remains difficult to translate into systems-based parameters that can be organized into structured design frameworks. This study proposes a system-based approach to address this gap, using the CSPM (Contextual-Schematic-Perceptual-meaning) framework as a semantic encoding structure and the SAR (Sustainability Activation Ratio) as a structural indicator derived from SC (Sensory Completeness) and ORI (Operational Recurrence Intensity). The sensory modalities examined in this study include visual, olfactory, tactile, auditory, gustatory, and kinesthetic modalities (VOTAGK). Observations were conducted using a qualitative auto-ethnographic approach with OTA review triangulation in selected hospitality settings to identify recurring sensory configurations. Rather than serving as a statistical measure, SAR functions as a structural indicator for interpreting multisensory spatial systems, particularly in understanding the relationship between sensory richness and operational dependency. The findings demonstrate that CSPM enables systematic encoding of multisensory spatial data into structured design parameters, while SAR provides an interpretable indicator of operational dependency within spatial systems. Together, these components form a modeling framework that supports structured design decision-making in sustainable hospitality contexts, with implications for local cultural activation and alignment with SDG 8 and SDG 11.
