This article introduces a novel three-layer mechanicallyreconfigurable antenna based on gap waveguide technology.By eliminating the need for physical contact between fixed andmovable components, this technology enables seamless verticalintegration of a mechanically reconfigurable phase shifterwith the other antenna layers. The phase shifter operateswith an air gap between a movable plate and the stationarybody of the antenna, ensuring no electromagnetic leakage. Todemonstrate practical applicability, a fully metallic 1-D beamscanningantenna was developed, overcoming the limitations ofelectronically steerable antennas, such as low eciency, highcost, and complexity. A prototype was fabricated and measured,showing good agreement between the measured and simulatedresults. The antenna achieves a 5.2% fractional bandwidth in the12.7–13.38-GHz range, with a peak gain of 21.1 dBi, an eciencyhigher than 85%, and beam scanning from 30 to +30. Thesefeatures make it a suitable candidate for various Ku-band radarsystems and satellite communications.
