Dietary supplementation of grape polyphenols in diabetic db/db mice

Diet intervention of diabetic (db/db) mice with grape polyphenols(GPs) was aimed to observe whether GPs could improve the overall metabolic status of hyperphagic db/db mice. These mice exhibit a severely obese phenotype and impaired glucose homeostasis in the early stages of life. GP supplementation has been shown to alter the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota concomitant with improved glucose metabolism in high-fat diet-induced models of metabolic syndrome. Here we sought to elucidate if GPs could recover impaired glucose tolerance, hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia characteristic of the db/db model by modulating the gut microbial communities and/or their bacterial metabolites, such as bile acids.
