The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program of the United States Forest Service has been operational since 1930, with updates released every 5 years, providing essential information for evaluating U.S. forests. With a long-standing history and high reliability, FIA data delivers critical status and trend information to resource managers, policymakers, investors and the general public through an annual inventory system covering public and private forestlands across the entire country. The reports cover the status and trends of forest area and location; tree species, size and health conditions; total tree growth, mortality and harvest removals; wood production and utilization rates for various products; and forestland ownership. This information is applied in multiple scenarios, such as assessing wildlife habitat conditions, evaluating the sustainability of ecosystem management practices, and supporting planning and decision-making activities conducted by both public and private enterprises. The goal of the FIA Band System is to develop a nationally consistent, efficient and comprehensive FIA CORE Program.
