A tab-separated values files (which can be opened in a plain text editor, Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, or any spreadsheet editor) that contains quotes from 42 papers.

There are five columns: (i) ‘Reference’ provides the full reference; (ii) ‘Category’ describes whether the quote was determined to suggest that plants do not have a germline at all or that the plant germline is set aside late in development; (iii) ‘Quote’ is the quote of interest; (iv) ‘Context’ gives the full context of the quote, usually the paragraph in which it appears; (v) ‘Page’ gives the page number on which the quote is found.
