Reproducibility Materials for a Systematic Review of AI-Enabled Food Traceability and Digital Labelling in European E-Commerce

This repository contains the methodological and study-level reproducibility materials generated for a systematic review of artificial-intelligence-enabled food traceability, digital labelling, consumer-facing food information, and related digital technologies in European e-commerce. The deposited materials document the literature-identification, deduplication, screening, eligibility-assessment, classification, critical-appraisal, and descriptive-synthesis processes used to construct the final evidence base. The review covers literature published between 2016 and 2026 and examines technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain-based provenance systems, QR codes, smart labels, Internet of Things applications, digital product information systems, and other digitally mediated traceability and labelling mechanisms. The repository includes: complete search strategies for Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus, and PubMed; documentation of the supplementary OpenAlex search; documentation of backward and forward citation searching; PRISMA 2020 reporting materials and verified study-selection counts; eligibility criteria based on the Population–Concept–Context framework; the record-level list of studies excluded during eligibility assessment, with reasons for exclusion; the complete inventory of included studies; study classifications by publication year, study design, identification source, and analytical dimension; the study-level coding matrix; critical-appraisal ratings and supporting justifications; source data underlying descriptive analyses, tables, and figures; supporting documentation for the review’s legal and regulatory evidence mapping. The bibliographic searches identified records from Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and OpenAlex. After deduplication and eligibility assessment, the final evidence base comprised 91 included studies. The materials are deposited to support transparency, verification, reuse, and long-term preservation of the review process. This repository is maintained as a journal-independent research record. It may support different manuscript versions, journal submissions, preprints, or subsequent publications derived from the same systematic-review evidence base. The repository does not represent a journal-specific supplementary file, and the inclusion of a record does not imply endorsement by any publisher or journal. All eligibility decisions, classifications, critical-appraisal judgements, legal interpretations, and conclusions remain the responsibility of the authors.
