For power-limited wireless sensor networks, energy efficiency is a critical concern. Receiving packets is proven to be one of the most power-consuming tasks of a wireless sensor node. Wake-up receivers (WuRxs) enable asynchronous communication while maintaining low power consumption. This article focuses on off-the-shelf WuRx using low-frequency pattern matchers (LFPMs), e.g. AS3933. None of the previous publications properly show their measurement methods, discuss the effects of the LFPM setup, or generation of the wake-up packet. The performance and setup of the AS3933 were investigated by an LF analysis. By adding a passive envelope detector, a WuRx working in the 868 MHz band was built up. Due to the LF analysis, multiple improvements to the WuRx performance were made, increasing the sensitivity, decreasing power consumption, and latency. The proposed WuRx profiles achieved a sensitivity of -56.4 dBm, power consumption of 5.71 µW, and latency of 9.02 ms. A clear improvement compared to related WuRx implementation was shown.
