Diatom communities from seawater samples of the G-NEO1 coastal monitoring station in Nuevo Gulf, Argentina.

This dataset includes 80 observations encompassing diatom counts from seawater samples and associated water temperature from the G-NEO1 (Golfo Nuevo Estación Oceanográfica) coastal monitoring station in Nuevo Gulf, Puerto Madryn city (Argentina). Diatom data comprises monthly surface and bottom samples collected over distinct time periods. Surface samples were taken from 1 meter below the surface during high tide, spanning September 2021 to October 2023. Bottom samples, collected 1 meter above the seabed during high tide, cover the period from March 2022 to October 2023. The main purpose of this station is to evaluate seasonal and inter-annual variations of oceanographic variables (e.g. temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll and carbonate system) and the dynamics of the plankton community. GNEO-1 has been sampled monthly by members of the Laboratorio de Oceanografía Biológica (LOBio) of the Centro para el Estudio de Sistemas Marinos - Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CESIMAR - CONICET) since 2018. GNEO-1 is part of the Red Argentina de Observación Marina (ROMA) within the Network of the Pampa Azul Initiative (https://pampazul.gob.ar/redes-de-observacion/), the GOA-ON Network (https://www.goa-on.org/) and the NF-POGO NANO-DOAP Global Project (https://nf-pogo-alumni.org/projects/global/). The dataset has been formatted following the standards of the Tropical South American Diatom Database (https://zenodo.org/records/5721364)--a database constituent of Neotoma (www.neotomadb.org), a global community-curated database by regional experts for multiple types of paleoecological data--and as part of the project "DiatomS mEEt Databases: resources and practices to enable large-scale ecological research (SEED)" funded by the International Society for Diatom Research (https://isdr.org/early-career-networking-award/).
