Dunster West Street Cruck Beam

Dig Village, Dunster, June 2016 22 West Street C14th cruck beam, facing N in the intial view, with street on the E side. This ancient beam was one of two still in situ in the roof space of a house on West Street. At some point, the roof had been raised to a slightly greater height, and this beam was left in place, isolated. This provided a good opportunity to walk around it. It has suffered over time, with a splint added to maintain it's integrity, but it no longer offers any structural support to the roof. Soot blackening on one side, and beneath shows evidence of a hearth below, from a time when the building was still a hall space, and the roof was visible from the ground level.
