This book was used to register licensed surveyors in Victoria. Details include: certificate number, licence number, registration date, name, address, qualification and remarks.A list of Surveyors-General, 1851 to 1952, appears in the volume after the registrations.The Surveyors Board was constituted under the Land Surveyors Act 1895 (No. 1400) to register suitably qualified surveyors. The composition of the seven- member board was defined in the Act (section 4). The Board was also responsible for maintenance of a Register book of qualified surveyors to whom licences were issued. Cancellation or suspension of licences had also to be recorded in the register. Such changes in registration status of surveyors were published in the Government Gazette.Only licensed surveyors were entitled to conduct surveys for the alienation and disposal of Crown Land under such Act and under all Acts affecting titles to land.The board was in charge of examinations (s. 9) and could charge fees (s. 10).The 1895 Act was amended in 1958 (Act No. 6288, further research required). The Surveyors Board was reconstituted on 1977 under the Land Surveyors (Surveyors Board) Act 1977 (No. 8990). It became the Institute of Surveyors Victoria Incorporated pursuant to the Companies Act 1890 as a company limited by guarantee.
