A Phonetic-Semi-Literate Motif-Based Interpretation of the Voynich Manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript (VM) is a 15th-century codex that has resisted interpretation for over a century. This research proposes a phonetic, semi-literate, motif-based approach to the manuscript, suggesting that it was authored by a knowledgeable but uneducated scribe using formulaic structures to encode botanical, medicinal, and cosmological knowledge. Using statistical repetition analysis, phonetic approximation, and contextual semantic assignment, preliminary translations across all 240 folios reveal coherent patterns that align with the manuscript’s illustrations. This methodology demonstrates that repeated motifs correspond to core concepts, such as plant roots, procedural instructions, and astronomical observations. The project provides a testable, reproducible framework for interpreting the VM, bridging historical manuscript studies, cryptography, and computational linguistics. By validating these translations against illustrations and folio context, this research offers new insights into 15th-century European scribal practices and semi-literate knowledge transmission.
