Sediment microbial electrolysis cell (SMEC), which positions a cathode chamber directly above the sediment and controls the cathode potential, was developed and evaluated for its methane production characteristics at the cathode and sediment remediation performance around the anode. The SMFC used carbon felt as each electrode, and the cathode potential was controlled as -0.9 V vs S.H.E. (Standard hydrogen electrode). Additionally, SMFC and open circuit conditions were also operated to compare the sediment remediation performance. As a result, the SMEC methane production rate reached 4.6 NL-CH4/m3/day, and the methane generation efficiency, the efficiency of the current generation to the methane production, reached 80%.
