By highlighting a critical yet underrecognized flaw in lab-scale environmental technology research, the work underscores the need for precise identification of key wastewater constituents and experimental designs that explicitly address multi-component interactions. Such rigor is essential to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial implementation, ensuring technologies are both mechanistically sound and economically viable for real-world resource recovery applications.
