Overthelastdecade,therehasbeenanincreaseinfundingforresearchonandarisingnumberofpublicationsthataddresstheenvironmental,health,andsafety(EHS)aspectsofengineerednanomaterials(ENMs).ThoseeffortshaveledtoprogressinunderstandingsomeaspectsofpotentialEHSrisksposedbyENMs.However,researchonthepotentialEHSimplicationsofENMsstilllackscontext,particularlywithregardtofuturerisks,becauseusesofmaterialsarechangingrapidly.EHSresearcheffortsarenotkeepingpacewiththeevolvingapplicationsofnanotechnology,anduncertaintypersistsaboutthepotentialimplicationsofthematerialsforconsumers,workers,andecosystems.Toaddressthoseuncertainties,theEnvironmentalProtectionAgencyaskedtheNationalResearchCounciltoperformanindependentstudytodevelopandmonitortheimplementationofanintegratedresearchstrategytoaddresstheEHSaspectsofENMs.Inresponsetothatrequest,theCommitteetoDevelopaResearchStrategyforEnvironmental,Health,andSafetyAspectsofEngineeredNanomaterialswasformedandreleasedareportinJanuary2012,AResearchStrategyfortheEnvironmental,Health,andSafetyAspectsofEngineeredNanomaterials.Thatreportdevelopedaresearchplanwithshort-termandlong-termprioritiesandestimatedresourcesneededtoimplementtheresearchplan.
