Microarray analysis demonstrated that the expression levels of minor pilin genes change in response to surface contact. A total of 120 genes were determined to have altered transcription between planktonic and surface growth in this analysis. Among these genes, 13 are located on the pSYSM plasmid, and some are newly predicted minor pilin genes. Overall design: Transcriptional changes of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells upon surface contact were measured. Therefore, samples were taken from a planktonic and a sessile culture after 4 and 8 h. For each condition, duplicates were analyzed.
