Samples were retreived from the Mediterranean sea at a site off the coast of Alicante, Spain during a period of water stratification (October 2015). Seawater samples were retrieved from multiple depths the ranging from the epipelagic to the bathypelagic zone at 15, 45 (Deep Chlorophyll Maximum), 60 and 2000 meters deep and used for preparing viral metagenomes (viromes) sequenced in an Illumina HiSeq 4000 platform.
