VPRS 14960 Areas of Parishes and Allotments

This series consists of returns sent by surveyors to the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538) after measuring and delineating the boundaries of parishes and the divisions of them into sections and allotments. These calculations and summaries of exact measurements were accompanied by a map of the parish showing its boundaries and those of the sub-divisions with each section and allotment being identified by letters and / or numbers. These corresponded with those listed in the summary. A few of the plans might be able to be found in VPRS 8168 Historic Plan Collection.Other details given might include the number of the corresponding plan, the name of the surveyor and the date of the registration of the data at the Department of Crown Lands and Survey. It seems that some surveyors forwarded the details for a number of parishes together. These parishes had been designated as a block which was dealt with by one surveyor.Prior to the Amending Land Act 1865 land which was to be offered for sale or selection had to be surveyed prior to proclamation of availability. This series is part of the records created by this survey which was carried out by both Governement employed surveyors and contract surveyors. A considerable number of the parishes covered by these records were proclaimed as part of Agricultural Areas under the provisions of the Land Act 1862.
