The microbial community of biocrusts from around Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen,Svalbard has been studied. Sites of primary colonization and early succession stages on the foreland of retreating glaciers and other sites without stable vegetation cover have been approached to understand the dynamics of microbial colonization and the formation of protosoil and to indirectly approach the evaluation of the effects of the climate change in the High Arctic.
