Development of IT system and TEM camera performance

Overview of relative performance of IT systems (storage, network, memory) vs. pixel frequency of TEM cameras. The analysis highlights that TEM camera performance has increased by almost two orders of magnitude relative to other IT systems since 2009. This drives change in the design of IT systems that handle TEM camera data. Furthermore, the relative performance of network versus mass storage technology favors different cluster designs. Fast network and slow storage favors centralized NAS with a cluster file system like Lustre, while slow network and fast storage favors local storage on the processing nodes, for example with the Hadoop file system, for data-parallel applications.
