Some plant species have 'melanin-like' black pigmentation of seed. But the chemical and genetic nature of this 'melanin-like' black pigment has not been explored yet, because of its complex structure and ability to withstand almost all solvents. Identification of genetic networks participating in trait formation is a key to understanding metabolic processes (and probably substances) involved.
