We evaluated transcriptional profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 54 pregnant women in Kenya, 19 of whom delivered preterm. To characterize immune function in these women, we either left PBMCs unstimulated or stimulated the PBMCs in vitro with the A/California/2009(pH1N1) strain of influenza to understand the virus-induced immune response.
